How Does Phone Number Masking Work?

Call masking is a VoIP feature that allows you to “mask” or hide your personal phone number and show another number in its place. It lets you change the outbound caller ID and display your business phone number instead. Customers will be more comfortable receiving your call from a local number instead of an unknown or international number.

How to Use Call Masking?

Global Call Forwarding offers call masking and caller ID override with our Outbound Calling service. You can add this to your virtual phone number plan and then mask your phone number with any of the other numbers you own or purchase with us. Want to learn more? When to Mask Your Phone Number?

Your business may want to use call masking for a variety of reasons from protecting caller’s personal information to extending global coverage. Here are some reasons to mask your phone number:

  • Improve local responsiveness when calling global customers by using local numbers with recognizable area codes.
  • Increase callback rates by presenting local or toll-free calling options for international customers.
  • Protect caller’s information when working remotely so that they display the business caller ID instead of their personal phone number.
  • Maintain privacy and industry-wide compliance.
  • Centralize business communication and increase uniformity when your global teams interact with customers.

Is Call Masking Legal?

Yes, call masking is legal as long as your business does not use it deceptively, maliciously, or to commit fraud. The core purpose and intent of number masking is to simplify communication between your business and your customers, irrespective of location. Our feature is designed for legitimate business use, such as protecting privacy, enhancing customer service, centralizing call management, and establishing local presence.

That said, it’s crucial to employ number masking with integrity. Misusing this feature to deceive or trick customers can undermine trust and damage your brand’s reputation. Customers are increasingly cautious of scam callers and telemarketers who misrepresent themselves, making transparency and honesty in communication more important than ever.

For this reason, governments and telecommunications authorities like the FCC worldwide have regulations and compliance for using call masking technology. We encourage businesses to stay informed and observe federal, state-wide, and industry-specific legal requirements.

Global Call Forwarding advocates for the responsible and compliance-friendly use of call masking, ensuring it serves to benefit and secure the business-customer relationship, abiding by all regulatory requirements.
